Table 24 (Continued)
Recommendation for Sample Collection and
Preservation According to Measurement
1
Plastic (P), Glass (G). For metals, polyethylene with a
polypropylene cap (no liner) is preferred.
2
Recommended holding times for properly preserved samples
based on currently available data. Extension or reduction
of these times may be possible for some sample types and
measurements. Where shipping regulations prevent the use
of proper preservation techniques or the holding time is
exceeded, reported analytical data should indicate the
variation in recommended procedures.
If the sample is preserved, it should be warmed to 25C
3
(77F) for measurement or temperature correction made and
results reported at 25C (77F).
4
Where HN03 cannot be used because of shipping restrictions,
the sample may be initially preserved by icing and
immediately shipped to the laboratory. Upon receipt in the
laboratory, the sample must be acidified to a pH<2 with HN03
(normally 3 mL 1:1 HN03/L is sufficient). At the time of
analysis, the sample container should be thoroughly rinsed
with 1:1 HN03 and the washings added to the sample. A
volume correction may be required.

Data from National Enforcement Investigations Center,
Denver, Colorado, support a 4-week holding time for this
parameter in sewerage systems (SIC 4952).
